You may have noticed that we’ve started setting up meetings with you, our clients and colleagues, using a new tool, Calendly. Here’s what we really like about this tool:
For more about Calendly, check it out here.
Passwords are always on our mind, and we’ve discussed before how important it is to manage and secure them, and keep them up-to-date.
Keeping your valuable information safe – banking information, correspondence with family, friends and associates, accounts for purchasing any number of products and services – is something we think about and encounter just about every day, isn’t it? Not only maintaining robust passwords but also regularly changing them is a good practice. Many online systems and portals now also require two-factor authentication, demanding a second verification method in addition to passwords, usually where a verification code is sent to a separate address or device. So … it all gets rather intimidating and bewildering at times, doesn’t it?
Nevcon Accounting continues to turn to 1Password for all its password management needs. It’s a solid application, and we especially like how it’s organized, and how it gives us regular alerts to keep things up-to-date. But don’t just take our word for it. Here is a good review from PC Mag.
You can learn more about 1Password here: https://1password.com/
P.S. That 1Password was founded in Canada in 2005 is some wonderful icing on the cake, too!
While it’s convenient more and more to be able to sign or approve various transactions electronically versus having to sign a piece of paper, that quick, handy process is also subject to trickery. A member of our team recently received an email message asking them to click a link and sign something, and they almost responded to it absent-mindedly. Of course, they stopped and double-checked the sender email address, and it was not recognizable or associated with anyone or anything they might expect. They deleted the message immediately!
We’ve highlighted previously how phone and other forms of communication can be used to fool us into responding to things we shouldn’t, sometimes providing information to unauthorized parties. Not surprisingly, you can add email to the list of channels that can possibly mislead us.
Here is more on the prevalent DocuSign phishing scam:
For several years, scammers have been leveraging the growing popularity and convenience of online e-signature and contract platforms for their own illicit gains. Not surprisingly, the list of spoofed companies includes the most widely-used of them all—DocuSign. These fraudulent emails are particularly dangerous since many victims are already accustomed to trusting the platform with personal information – including social security numbers and bank routing numbers. Read more here.
What should you do if you receive a suspicious email message?
As we’ve observed before, it’s a shame we all have to be so suspicious, but this information is very useful for avoiding the hurt, confusion and worse that scammers try to cause.
Nevcon Accounting has been without power since ice storms hit central and eastern Ontario on March 30th. We’ve managed – including keep up with assignments for our clients – on backup power, but have had to conserve energy.
We’re (cautiously!) happy to report that full power and services have now been restored. We’re especially grateful to the tireless efforts of Hydro One, repairing and replacing damaged infrastructure and restoring power under often challenging conditions.
Thank you again for everyone’s patience, and for checking in on our wellbeing during this adventure. We’re forging ahead to get caught up on everyone’s work in a timely fashion. Please be in touch through all regular contact methods with any questions, updates, etc.
Due to ice storms and power line damage in our area, Nevcon Accounting is currently experiencing power disruptions and is without telephone services.
In the mean time, you can still contact us by other methods, including via e-mail. Please continue to be in touch.
Thank you for your patience and for checking in on our wellbeing! We will update everyone when full service is restored.
